  • Be aware of people walking and riding bikes.
  • Slow down when you see children playing close to the street.
Home Safety Tips
  1. Don't let thieves know you aren't home. Create the illusion that someone is at your house.
  2. Don't provide places for thieves to hide. Keep your bushes and shrubs trimmed.
  3. Close garage doors when not in use and you aren’t within sight of the garage, and keep your cars in the garage, if possible.
  4. A smart garage door control system will alert you when your garage door opens and allow you to set a time to close it automatically. Plus, you can control it via your mobile phone from anywhere. With prices starting at $30, it's definitely cost effective.
  5. Use a cable tie or other device to secure your garage door disengage handle. Crooks have figured out they can break the garage door window, reach in and pull the handle that disengages the automatic opener. Then they can manually lift up the garage door.
  6. Make sure you lock your cars and don’t leave anything in them if they are parked in the driveway.
  7. Install doorbell and perimeter cameras.
  8. Make sure the keypad code to get into your garage isn't too easily figured out. And keep the door from your garage into your house locked.
About Home Security Systems
 
Anyone who has a monitored home security system must register it with the Huntsville Police Department prior to installation and renew the permit every year. The cost for the permit is $25 per year, and can be purchased at the downtown police headquarters. You will be given a permit sticker to place on your front door glass. Without this permit, you are subject to a fine if emergency personnel are called to your home, plus additional fines for every false alarm notification.
 
​Every security system vendor is required by the City of Huntsville to register your system and purchase your first permit without cost to you. But be sure to verify they have done so. Your permit may be renewed online every year.  Click HERE for information and renewals.
